Man in court on child defilement and sexual assault charges

A 40-year-old north Mayo man appeared before a District Court Judge today on seven charges of child defilement and one sexual assault.

The alleged offences, all involving the same victim, occurred between May and October 2015.

Reporting restrictions were imposed by Judge Grainne O'Neill which means the accused cannot be named in news reports.

At today's court in Castlebar, Sergeant Kieran Lavelle gave evidence of arresting the accused and bringing him to Castlebar Garda Station where he charged him at 10.31 a.m.

After each charge was read to him, the defendant either gave no reply or said “no comment.”

After Supt. Joe McKenna said the State had no objection to bail, provided strict conditions were attached, the accused was remanded on bail to Ballina District Court on March 10.
