WINNER of the Melissa Patterson Cup as the top female athlete last year, Michaela Walsh continues to blaze a trail at national and international level as she breaks record after record.

A student of Scoil Muire Agus Padraig, Swinford, she also received the overall Irish School’s Athlete of the Year Award.

She had an outstanding year for her club at national and international level in 2016. She represented Ireland at the World Under 20 Championships in Poland in the shot putt where she set a new national junior record and qualified for the World Under 20 final and represented her country at the European Senior Winter Throws in Romania.

At the Scottish Indoor Championships she won gold in the shot put and set a number of new Scottish records while at the Irish Indoor Championships she won the Under 19 indoor shot put title, the Under 20 national indoor title, the Under 23 AAI title, all with new Irish records.

In the national outdoor championship she won gold in the Under 20 women’s hammer and gold in the Under 20 women’s shot put, breaking the national junior record last set in 1967.
