Islands series kicks off on RTÉ

THE Mayo islands of Clare and Inishturk, along with neighbouring Inishbofin, are featuring on RTÉ’s Nationwide television programme this week.

Last night's show visited Clare Island, while tomorrow (Wednesday) the Nationwide crew will travel south to Inishturk, and on Friday they visit Inishbofin off the Galway coast.

The programmes will give the viewer a flavour of what island life is like for the people who call them home while also focusing on the history, culture, heritage and breathtaking scenery, which is abundant on each of the three islands.

Programme producer Maria Mullarkey, from Bangor Erris, and a very proud Mayo woman, said: “All three islands are unique, each with their own identity and history, but what is evident on all of them is the friendliness and hospitality of the people and the stunning scenery. The three members of the team, presenter Mary Kennedy, cameraman Brian McVeigh and I thoroughly enjoyed our experiences on each of the three islands. They are very special places and they’re definitely worth a visit.”

Last night's programme featured Clare Island, which has about 158 full time residents. The island is famous as the ancestral home of the legendary 16th century Pirate Queen Granuaile and her castle dominates the harbour.

Tomorrow's programme on Inishturk will show the peace and tranquillity enjoyed by visitors and the landscape that is a delight for walking enthusiasts.

Don't forget to tune in – Nationwide, RTÉ 1, continuing Wednesday and Friday, February 8 and 10.
