Brothers on The Sunday Times rich list

THREE Mayo brothers are new entrants on The Sunday Times Irish Rich List for Connaught.

Coming in at number 5 on the survey published yesterday are the Hughes brothers, Cathal, Harry and Owen, from Westport.

They‘ve seen their wealth grow by €33m in the past year to now stand at €238m. The brothers run Mayo Workwear, a €161m distributor and manufacturer of personal protection clothing, under the name of Portwest Clothing. They also own Hotel Westport.

Last month the brothers were involved in the purchase of Westport House. They plan to spend €50m refurbishing it.

Galway-born brothers Luke and Brian Comer are the richest people in Connaught according to the 2017 Sunday Times Irish Rich List, with a combined wealth of an estimated €906m from their property portfolio.

The Sunday Times Irish Rich List surveys the wealth of the 300 richest individuals and families on the island of Ireland in a variety of areas including entertainment, sport, business, technology and construction. The list has been compiled by journalists Colm Murphy and Robert Watts using a wide range of accounts, annual reports, shareholder filings and other sources as well as usually private information shared by those who feature on the list.
