Sixteen go to post in search of the Moclair Cup

WHO will be in the winners enclosure in this year's Mayo senior football championship?

Our sports team at The Connaught Telegraph takes a different look at the 16 teams that will go to post in search of the Moclair Cup.

Here is a flavour of John Melvin's different take in his Melvine column as he tries to find the winner of the 2017 championship.

He writes: “With more than a passing interest in matters equine, I was thinking, if the Mayo senior football championship was a horse race, how would it be viewed?

“Sixteen go to post for this Grade 1 event, and, not surprisingly, heading the market is the three-in-a-row seeking Castlebar, from the Mitchels’ stable.

“Like any horse race, the odds are a fair indication as to how things are likely to pan out and in recent years in particular, the bookies have been very much on the money.

“Unlike the Grand National where there is a big chance of a long shot upsetting the odds, it is unlikely that we will see a dark horse emerging from the pack this year.”

Aiden Henry also marks your card for the likely winner of the intermediate football championship.
