Man remanded in custody on drugs charge

A 30-year-old man was remanded in custody when he appeared before a special court in Castlebar today  in connection with the seizure of more than €70,000 worth of cannabis plants several days ago.

The plants were seized in the Islandeady area near Castlebar by the Mayo Divisional Drugs Unit as part of a nationwide operation.

Eageras Stalgys, with an address at Islandeady, Castlebar, appeared before Judge Seamus Hughes at a special sitting of Castlebar District Court in connection with the seizure.

On the application of Supt. Joe Doherty, the accused was remanded in custody to appear before Harristown (Castlerea Prison) Court on Friday next.

There was no application for bail.

The accused was one of four men arrested nationwide some days ago in connection with the seizure nationwide of an estimated €200,000 worth of cannabis plants.

Apart from Islandeady, Castlebar, searches were carried out in Nennagh, Co. Tipperary and Dundalk, Co. Louth.
