Greenway Cycle in aid of Mayo Cancer Support's Rock Rose House

THE eighth annual Greenway Cycle in aid of Mayo Cancer Support Centre's Rock Rose House, Castlebar, will take place on August 6.

The cycle, which was recently launched by Fr. Charlie McDonell and Fr. Patrick Burke in Westport at the Great Western Greenway, is organised each year by local man John Tiernan, who describes Rock Rose House as a place where 'a light of hope can be given to people in a very dark place in their lives who are affected by a cancer diagnosis'.

Mayo Cancer Support offers support to people affected by cancer, and their families and friends, in the main support centre, Rock Rose House, and also in the outreach service in Ballina Family Resource Centre.

Some of the services on offer include a drop-in centre for information, advice and listening, telephone support professional counselling, therapies such as massage, reflexology and bio-energy, stress management/self-esteem courses, mindfulness, art therapy, therapeutic writing, yoga, and a range of support groups. All services provided by Mayo Cancer Support are free of charge.

Last year, 1,861 people affected by cancer and their families throughout Mayo accessed the services provided by Mayo Cancer Support.

Trisha Greavy, general manager of the organisation, said: “The delivery of the services wouldn’t be possible without the goodwill and generosity of the public through donations and in organising and supporting our fundraising events, which 90% of our funding relies on.

'All money raised in Mayo goes directly to the local cancer support centres in Mayo and we would like to sincerely thank everyone who supports our organisation so that we are able to continue to deliver the provision of services to people in Mayo affected by cancer, and their families.”

Registration for the cycle is €20 and will take place on Sunday, August 6, at 9 a.m. in Westport Leisure Centre. The cycle will depart at 10 a.m. to Tiernaur, where refreshments will be served at Nevin's Newfield Inn before cyclists return to Westport. Helmets are compulsory for all cyclists. Sponsorship cards are also available. Your support for this event would be greatly appreciated.
