Young Mayo garda is hailed a hero

A MAYO garda based in Sligo has been hailed a hero after he was involved in rescuing a man from a local river.

Garda Stephen Fahy, a native of Claremorris, and local man Adam McGoldrick jumped to the rescue of a man who had entered the river by Hyde Bridge in Sligo on August 6 last

The man was saved from the Garavogue River and brought to Sligo Hospital where he was treated for hypothermia.

Garda Fahy, who has been a member of the force for two years, has been described as embodying the “positive†and “heroic†work that cops undertaken every day.

GRA representative, Garda Ray Wims, said that the act illustrated the commitment local gardai show towards the community.

He said: “Garda Fahy is a young, active and dedicated member of the force. He proudly serves the communities in Sligo and he didn't think twice about getting into the fast-flowing river himself.

He said: “He is happy knowing that the man was recovered and is safe. He is also grateful for the help of Adam McGoldrick, who also assisted in the rescue.â€

Garda Wims added that gardaí are well respected in the area and felt the latest event was an indication of the real work they undertake.
