Prominent Fine Gael member is set to make election announcement

A PROMINENT member of Fine Gael in Mayo is set to announce his decision tomorrow morning to seek a nomination to run in the next general election, The Connaught Telegraph has learned.

The announcement will not be a major surprise to those who closely follow the political scene in the county.

The move will mean that former Mayo GAA star and Castlebar nominee Alan Dillon will face a contest at next month's convention as there is now expected to be at least four names vying for three positions on the ticket.

However, the prospect of six names being placed before delegates cannot be ruled as Senator Paddy Burke and Senator John O'Mahony are reported to be strongly considering entering the contest.

The team will be headed by Minister Michael Ring while Senator Michelle Mulherin is expected to be the Ballina-based nominee.
