The late John (Val) Cummins

Passing of esteemed member of south Mayo business family

THE death has taken place of John Valentine (Val) Cummins, New Street, Ballinrobe, a member of one of south Mayo's best known business families.

Paying tribute to him this afternoon, local Councillor Damian Ryan said the deceased had contributed hugely to developing the retail and commercial sector of Ballinrobe before his retirement a number of years ago.

He said: “He built up his business from a relatively small shop to one of the finest hardware outlets and supermarkets in the county. He did so through hard work and dedication. Deepest sympathy is extended to the Cummins family on their loss. The deceased will be hugely missed.”

Val is survived by his sons Richard and Vincent, daughters Paula (Sydney) and Fiona (Navan), son-in-law Mario, daughter-in-law Martina, partner Denise, grandchildren Mark, Rachel, Paul, Anna, Lydia, Isabelle, Laura, J V, Sarah, David, James, Aoibhinn, Caitlin and Rebecca, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours, and a large circle of friends.

He was predeceased by his wife Clare, daughter Anna, and son John.

His remains will be reposing at Cummins Funeral Home, Ballinrobe, on Monday evening from 5 o'clock with removal at 8 o'clock to St. Mary’s Church, Ballinrobe.

Requiem Mass takes place on Tuesday at 1 o'clock with burial afterwards in the New Cemetery, Ballinrobe.
