For the Green and Red – a song for Sam 2018

FOR The Green and Red, a song written for the Mayo senior football team by musician Ger Kirrane, is now available to download for free on SoundCloud (

The video for the song, which also contains audio of the commentary from the 1951 final win against Meath, is also available to view on YouTube (

The song was produced by Brendan Carthy at the Orchard Studio, Enniscorthy, and features Jay O’Sullivan on fiddle.

After seeing how close the team came to winning the All-Ireland last September and how proud the supporters were of the players and management for the effort they had put into the season, I wrote this song as an encouragement to keep going. The dream to bring Sam Maguire back to Mayo will never die,” says Ger about how the song originated.

I do get the irony that I’m a Dub writing a song about the Mayo football team, but I have a strong connection with the county and its supporters over the years. My mother is from Bekan and I have many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends spread throughout the county.

Hopefully their day will come soon!”
