Pleads guilty to 20 charges of sexual assault

A MAN pleaded guilty at Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court today (Tuesday) to 20 counts of sexual assault on a number of females at locations in the west of Ireland over a 22-year period.

Reporting restrictions in the case were imposed by Judge Rory MacCabe which means that the accused cannot be named for legal reasons.

The charges against the accused were taken under the Criminal Law Rape Amendment Act 1990.

Three victims in all were involved.

When each of the 20 charges, which relate to the period 1992 to 2014, were read to the accused in court he replied 'Guilty' in each instance.

Judge MacCabe remanded the accused in custody to February 16 for sentencing.

Victim impact statements and a prison governor's report will be available to the court at the sentencing hearing.
