Community concern after attempted raid in west Mayo

A MEMBER of the Mayo Policing Forum has called on property owners in west Mayo to be extra vigilant in regard to security issues.

Councillor Christy Hyland said the fact the Corrib Oil filling station in Louisburgh was targeted by raiders for the second time in a month is a cause for alarm.

In the early hours of Thursday morning last an unsuccessful attempt was made to force open an ATM machine at the premises.

The gang believed to be involved showed considerable expertise on both occasions in the manner in which they disabled CCTV and burglar alarms.

There may be a connection between those involved and a gang who recently broke into Horkan's Garden Centre at Turlough, Castlebar, and stole a substantial sum of money.

Gardai in Westport have also reported a number of break-ins in recent weeks in the Rosbeg area of the town.
