Susan volunteers for South Africa teaching blitz

A MAYO teacher is undertaking a teaching blitz in South Africa later this month.

Susan Mannion, from Ballyheane, will be travelling to Cape Town with Mellon Educate to work in one of the poorest schools in the region.

Susan, who teaches in Terenure College in Dublin, explained why she is travelling with 60 other volunteers with the Irish-based charity: “Nelson Mandela, who famously walked a long road to freedom once said, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to make a difference’. This summer I have decided to travel to Cape Town to pursue a life-time dream of volunteering to make a little difference in the lives of children who may not be as blessed as we are.

I have worked as a teacher for the last 13 years in both Mayo and Dublin and it is something that I love and have a great passion for. At this stage in my career I feel that I have much more to give, especially to those who need it most.”

Susan, writing on her Go Fund Me page, said she has created the page because she wants 'to make a difference'.

Susan is covering the costs of the trip herself but hopes to raise €3,500 for Mellon Educate through her Go Fund Me page.
