Blackie to be honoured in his home town

THE cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Councillor Blackie Gavin, is to be feted in his home town.

The Fianna Fáil Cumann in Castlebar has organised a function in his honour at Celtic Park on Saturday next, September 1, starting at 8 p.m.

The celebration is to mark his achievements in public life over a long number of years.

He has got off to a whirlwind start as chair of the county council, welcoming Pope Francis to Mayo last weekend and presenting him with a gold Mayo pin.

"It was a huge personal honour and one I will never forget," said Councillor Gavin.
