Maeve Gallagher

Maeve named on Irish team for world cycling road race

MAYO athlete Maeve Gallagher has been selected to represent Ireland at the world cycling road race in Austria later this month.

Maeve, a member of Castlebar Cycling Club, is a very busy lady these days.

The fifth year student in St. Joseph's, Castlebar, has just returned from competing for Team Ireland at the European Youth Championships Triathlon Festival, which was held in Loutraki in Greece. Over a four-day period Maeve competed in three tough triathlons and secured a 10th and second placing, while her relay team was 14th – a brilliant result.

Maeve has spent the summer representing Ireland throughout Europe and competed in triathlons in Spain, Portugal, Estonia, Romania and lastly in Greece. In Romania, she was on the podium having achieved a silver medal in the European Triathlon Championship race.

This week she has turned her attention to cycling and is currently in Kilkenny racing her bike in Ras na mBan, a race that attracts the best female riders from across Europe.

So far in this five-day race event she is placed as the second Irish domestic rider - a great achievement for a first timer at this race.

As a result of her racing this week, Cycling Ireland have announced that Maeve will be travelling with them to represent Ireland in the upcoming World Cycling Championships in Innsbruck, Austria, on September 23.

This is an amazing achievement for this young athlete. Maeve is a member of Castlebar Cycling Club and you will often find her training around the county town. And when she's not on the bike, you'll find her training with Swinford Athletic Club.
