Market Square in Castlebar before the surface of the plaza was damaged

Traffic to be banned from Mayo casual trading plaza

A MOVE has been initiated to ban vehicular traffic from entering the plaza on Market Square in Castlebar.

Members of Castlebar Municipal District have passed a motion on the matter because of damage caused to the paved location.

It was proposed by Councillor Michael Kilcoyne, cathaoirleach, and seconded by Councillor Blackie Gavin.

"We want our traffic wardens to implement this policy," said Councillor Kilcoyne.

A section of the square has been left in a state of disrepair for almost a year.

Now Ann Sweeney, senior engineer, has confirmed that direct labour works are due to start at the location.

As well as carrying out repairs, new seating areas will be put in place as well as additional bollards to stop traffic entering the plaza.
