Renewed garda warning issued over 'vishing' scam in Mayo

A RENEWED garda 'vishing' warning has been issued to the public after a number of people in Mayo reported receiving scam calls over the weekend from persons claiming to be representing a major Irish bank.

In this case, the fraudsters requested financial, personal and security information, also telling those contacted hey had half an hour to change their personal access code (PAC) due to a security breach.

A garda spokeeperson said: “If you suspect any fraudulent activity from any call you receive, you should ask the caller to confirm their authenticity and, if still in doubt of the caller’s authenticity, end the call .

“If you feel your bank details have been compromised, call the number on the back of your credit or debit card or alternatively call the official number for the branch on the band website.

“Three different scams have been in circulation over recent months with callers attempting to trick people into divulging their banking or card credentials and provide codes from their card reader in order to access your online banking and make fraudulent payments.

“Never disclose codes your bank codes over the phone and never disclose the full five digits of your Personal Access Code (PAC).

“If you have received such a call and disclosed any of your banking details, contact your bank or An Garda Siochana immediately.”
