HSE has no plan for new patients' car park at Mayo A&E unit

THE HSE West has confirmed there are no plans to provide a new car park closer to the emergency department at Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar.

An elected member of the authority, Councillor Michael Kilcoyne, said the facility is needed for patients who find it difficult to walk long distances from their car to the hospital.

He said he was very disappointed to learn that no feasibility study has been conducted on the matter.

“I have been raising this matter for a number of years on the foot of complaints and the officials are not taking heed. I do not accept their response.” he hit out.

Mayo University Hospital undertook significant work at the front of the hospital in 2017 which increased the size of the drop-off area for patients.

The hospital also increased the number of designated parking spaces ar the rear of the complex.

Councillor Kilcoyne said the delay with the provision of a new modular unit to extend the emergency department in Castlebar is also unacceptable.
