Mayo get off to winning start with second half recovery

Mayo ............ 1-8

Roscommon ..1-7

MAYO produced a scintillating second-half display to ensure a winning start to the Allianz National League against Roscommon at Elverys MacHale Park tonight.

Having trailed by 0-5 to 0-1 at half-time after playing into the teeth of a gale force wind, the home side looked a different force on the resumption, performing with greater cohesion and zeal.

But it took them 23 minutes to get back on level terms, the equalising point being executed by inspirational captain Paddy Durcan.

Subsequent points by Brendan Harrison and Jason Doherty put Mayo in command before debutant Brian Reape struck a stunning goal with six minutes remaining to seal the result.

There was an injury time scare for Mayo when Shane Killoran snatched a last-ditch goal, but it was too little, too late for the FBD League champions as James Horan's charges held out for a one-point triumph in very demanding conditions.

Two super converted frees by Jason Doherty on his 100th appearance proved critical in the end.

Others to shine included Donal Vaughan, Brian Harrison, Aidan O'Shea and Diarmuid O'Connor.

Next up for Mayo is an away match against Tyrone at Omagh tomorrow week.
