Cpl. Heneghan is recorded on the roll of honour at the Mayo Peace Park in Castlebar.

Memorial to be unveiled to Ballinrobe soldier

A MEMORIAL bench to the late Corporal Fintan Heneghan will be unveiled in Ballinrobe next week.

The unveiling will take place on Friday, March 15, at 2.30 p.m. and the event is timely as it comes in the lead up to the 30th anniversary of his death.

Representatives of the Defence Forces will be in attendance at the official unveiling.

Cpl. Heneghan was serving with the UN in the Lebanon when he was killed along with two colleagues in a landmine explosion on March 21, 1989.

Confirmation of the unveiling of the memorial bench was given by local Councillor Damien Ryan at a Claremorris Municipal District meeting this afternoon, where he acknowledged the support of the council on the memorial.

As the 30th anniversary of Cpl. Heneghan's death approaches, Councillor Ryan said it was fitting to acknowledge someone who had made the ultimate sacrifice for the cause of peace.
