Cork outclass Mayo ladies

Cork 4-15

Mayo 2-5

THE Mayo ladies interest in the National League Division 1 title ended in Elverys MacHale Park, Castlebar, this afternoon after they suffered a big defeat by Cork.

Mayo played their best football in the opening half when playing against the strong breeze and only trailed by a point at the interval, 1-6 to 1-5.

All of Mayo’s five points in the first half were scored by Grace Kelly, with four coming from placed balls. Their goal, which arrived just before the break, was scored by Emma Needham. It came after a penalty by Rachel Kearns was saved by the Cork ‘keeper before Needham was first to react to the breaking ball and found the net.

Cork, who had two players sin-binned in the first half, scored their goal in the 22nd minute when centre-forward Niamh Cotter hit a cracking shot to the back of the net.

On the resumption, Cork began to dominate and scored three early points. Although Mayo cancelled out these scores when Sinead Cafferky fired home their second goal in the 37th minute, Cork hit back almost immediately with a goal from Doireann O’Sullivan.

From that moment onwards it was a case as to what the Leesiders' winning margin would be.
