Council responds to criticism over cost of swim at new Mayo facility

MAYO County Council has responded to criticism over the cost of a swim at the new Castlebar Swimming Pool and Leisure Centre.

Members of the public vented their anger on social media after it was revealed at the weekend that the price of a swim will be €10.

The facility is due to open next Friday.

Among those who felt the price was too steep was former Castlebar Town Council Thèrèse Ruane.

Local Fine Gael candidate Donna Sheridan also issued a statement on the matter.

The main source of public annoyance is the fact that €10 is more that double the price of the old pool.

Although it includes use of the new gym, there is a strong view that a swim-only  option should by in place.

The price of a swim and gym use for students and over-55s is €7.50 per session.

In a statement, Mayo County Council said the pricing structures are in line with facilities of similar size and scale.

"Ths facility is due to open on Friday and plans for a series of introductory offers will be announced to coincide with the opening.

"Pricing structures will be kept under constant review," the statement added.

It is widely hoped the issue of the swim-only option will be examined before Friday.
