Deputy Lisa Chambers addressing UN Security Council.

Chambers leads delegation at UN Security Council

MAYO Fianna Fáil TD Lisa Chambers has made the case for Ireland’s seat at the UN Security Council and represented the constituency while discussing the role of national parliaments in tackling global terrorism at the United Nations Headquarters in New York this week.

She commented: “It was an honour to represent both County Mayo and Ireland as a member of the OSCEPA Committee on Countering Terrorism when I addressed the United Nations Security Council.

Global terrorism is, by its nature, global, however those of us in Dáil Éireann have a role to play as national legislators.

It is important we have robust resources in place to protect ourselves in the event of terrorism in the State and work closely with international colleagues. As TDs we provide oversight of government and ensure the correct policies and laws are in place.

In an increasingly combative political landscape, in which far right forces are trying to cause division, it is vital institutions such as the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the United Nations and others work together for peace and security.”

While in the United Nations Deputy Chambers also made the case for Irish membership of the Security Council.

She said: “We are presently bidding for a seat, in competition with Norway and Canada, and I would be hopeful we would secure this seat following meetings this week.”
