State of Mayo Greenway route described as 'appalling'

A MEMBER of Mayo County Council has hit out at what he described as 'the appalling state' of the very popular greenway walk that leads from the new cemetery in Castlebar to Rehins Wood on the Newport Road in the town.

Councillor Ger Deere said that parts of the Greenway that is designated for cyclists is covered with briars and weeds and cannot be used - so cyclists who have to use pedestrian lane.

He stated: “This is proving a safety issue, not to mention unsightly weeds along an approach road that is used by thousands of tourist travelling on the Newport Road.

“It does not create a great impression. In fact one of the weeds that is common along the route is Ragworth weed (buachachalin), which is poisonous and we had a government minister only today warning the public and farmers of the health risks posed to humans and animals by this dangerous weed

“The local authority needs to address this issue as a matter of urgency.”
