The late Dr. Bert Farrell, Westport

Mayo family of Hospice founder taking part in Sea to Summit to aid cancer patients

MEMBERS of the family of the late Dr. Bert Farrell, Westport, are undertaking the Sea to Summit Challenge on Saturday, November 9, in aid of Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation.

Dr. Farrell, a Roscommon native who later became a Westport man, was a family GP in Westport where he was hugely respected by his community and patients alike.

In 1992 Dr. Farrell, together with a small group of like-minded people, set up Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation to provide a hospice care service, in association with the Western Health Board.

It was no easy task at the time and took a lot of time and effort but today the hospice provides a free service that has already helped thousands of families at the worst time in their lives.

In honour of Dr. Farrell, his children and grandchildren will take part in this year's Sea to Summit race to raise funds for the hospice.

Sea to Summit is a challenging adventure race that incorporates running, cycling and hiking.

The course takes in sections of Murrisk, the peaceful and picturesque resting place of the late Dr. Bertie Farrell.

The family will wear specially designed t-shirts bearing the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation logo and the hashtag #spiritofbertie.

Support for this wonderful family effort wil be reatly appreciated by the foundation and the Farrell family.
