Grieving Mayo family appeals for information about murder of loved one
Tonight on Crimecall on RTÉ One at 9.35 p.m. the family of murdered Mayoman Owen Maughan will appeal for information about those responsible for his death.
The Maughan family, Castlebar, will speak of their continuing grief and wait for answers about his murder as they issue a new appeal for help to progress the investigation into his death six years ago.
Owen Maughan (29) was shot outside a service station close to his home in Castlebar on December 18, 2013.
He died from his injuries later that night, leaving his wife a widow just one week before Christmas.
Despite an extensive investigation, nobody has been charged with his murder.
Owen’s wife Anne describes the incredible bond she shared with her husband.
“I loved the ground he walked on, I cherished him. He was the exact same way with me.”
She says her life changed forever the day Owen was murdered.
“My life hasn’t been the same. I cannot come to terms with why it happened. Why did they think it was ok to just drive into a garage and murder someone?”
Owen’s father Seamus adds: “The pain doesn’t go away. It’s something you have to learn to live with. No-one deserves to die like that.”
He speaks about the immense pain of losing his son, “It tears a hole in your heart that only God alone can fill.”
Each day Anne visits Owen’s grave and this Christmas she will continue a heartbreaking tradition.
“Each year for the New Year I actually travel to the graveyard. I bring in the New Year in the graveyard. I say Happy New Year and I tell him how much I love him and I miss him.”
She describes how it feels to lose her soulmate.
“I miss everything about him. He was my protector. Nothing in this world ever gave me bother because I knew he had my back. I’m torn apart."
Anne appeals directly to those people who have information about her husband’s murder.
“I do pray to God that someone will just come forward with information...Owen was a good person. Owen needs justice.”
Owen’s family are appealing to anyone with information to contact An Garda Siochana.
