Call for shorter Christmas closure of Mayo recycling centres

HOUSHOLDERS in the general Newport area have highlighted their frustration at the extended closure of the Derrinemura recycling centre over the festive season.

They have contacted elected members of Mayo County Council to outline that several people called to the site between December 27 and January 1 only to find closed gates and no indication of its Christmas opening hours.

One concerned resident said: “During the festive period, a lot of extra refuse was produced. Surely having the facility open would have been an appropriate measure.”

Mayo County Council posted on its social media platforms on December 23 that their recycling facilities at Derrinumera (Newport) and Rathroeen (Ballina) would be closed from December 24 to January 1 inclusive, a total of nine days.

They reopened yesterday.
