Officer appointed to administer pyrite remediation scheme

HOMEOWNERS in Mayo affected by the pyrite issue will be glad to hear that Mayo County Council has appointed an officer to administer the Pyrite and Mica Remediation Scheme, soon to be published.

Senator Michelle Mulherin has confirmed that she has been informed by Eoghan Murphy, Minister for Housing and Urban Development, that the scheme will be published at the end of January and Mayo County Council will be in position to facilitate applications thereafter.

She explained: “I have also been in contact with Mr. Peter Hynes, chief executive of Mayo County Council, to establish what arrangements the council has in place to administer the scheme and I stressed the need for urgency in looking after all those whose lives have been blighted by the pyrite issue.

Arising out of my enquiries, Mayo County Council has confirmed that they have appointed an officer, in-house, to administer the scheme and soon after it is published they will hold a workshop for affected homeowners so people can understand the scheme and how it is run.

I have worked relentlessly with various ministers over a long period, raising the need for a pyrite scheme in the Seanad and the Dáil, highlighting the issue at every possible opportunity. I now hope this long drawn out process can be finalised and the scheme put in place.”
