Mayo on alert ahead of Storm Ciara

Due to the Status Orange and Yellow weather warnings issued by Met Eireann for Saturday and Sunday, Mayo County Council have a number of measures in place

The Flood Action Plan has been activated for Crossmolina due to potential heavy rainfall and high water levels in the River Deel.

The R313 Belmullet to Blacksod will be closed from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Staurday morning, and from 3 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Sunday. Local diversions in place due to anticipated tidal flooding.

A number of further road closures are possible in the west Mayo area due to the expected arrival of Storm Ciara on Saturday night, allied with high tide and storm surge on the Mayo coast expected at 6am on Sunday morning.

They are The L5840 Old Coast Road from Westport Quay and the local road at Carrowholly, Westport, known as The Barrier, could be closed to traffic for a time.

As a result of the alert in place for wind and coastal flooding for Mayo a number of local roads in coastal parts could also be closed at various times over the course of the weekend.

Mayo County Council's Severe Weather Assessment Team will monitor the situation over the days ahead.

Further information, including times of any road closures, will be posted on Mayo County Council’s website and social media channels.

In the event of a change to Met Eireann’s forecast these plans will be reviewed.
