East Mayo town to host its first Darkness into Light Walk

BALLYHAUNIS is set to host its first Darkness into Light Walk on May 9.

The local organising committee invites individuals and representatives from groups who would like to take part or help to organise the event to the Launch Night on Tuesday next, February 11, at 8 p.m. in the Clare Court Community House.

In 2009, in the Phoenix Park in Dublin, 400 people set-off on the inaugural Darkness into Light 5km walk to raise funds for Pieta House.

From small beginnings, the movement has grown year on year and last year over 200,000 people took part in 150 locations, in 16 countries across five continents.

Each year the walk provides an opportunity for people to connect with their local community and to show their support for those who have been bereaved by suicide.

The team of volunteers in Ireland and overseas return year on year to help make the experience a rewarding one and to help to continue to raise awareness in the global fight against suicide and self-harm.

Since Darkness into Light began, dedicated supporters have helped raise almost €20 million.
