Call for duty free zone at Mayo airport

A CALL has been made for a duty free zone at Ireland West Airport Knock.

Councillor Neil Cruise said following on from the establishment of a 300 ectare Strategic Development Zone (SDZ) at the facility, the establiahment of a Duty Free Zone at the SDZ now needs to happen.

He said it would encourage inward investment, thus creating jobs and more commercial activity.

Speaking at yesterday's meeting of Mayo County Council, Councillor Cruise said it is the next step in the development of the SDZ, established in 2019, and is necessary to further develop the Mayo airport.

"The airport should be the catalyst for inward investment and the creation of jobs for this region.

"Look at what has happened in the last 30 years since the establishment of such a duty free zone at Shannon Airport.

"This is the next vital step necessary for the development of airport," he added.
