Sean Kenny was a star for Tooreen hurlers in 2019.

Sean helped Tooreen land county and provincial titles

Hurling is more associated with the summer months than October but, at club level, the titles start to be handed out later in the year.

In Mayo, Tooreen are adept at collecting trophies. What makes them stand apart? Various theories have been put forward but, at the end of the day, it is all about a club that belongs to the players and the people - the solid foundations upon which Gaelic games are based.

Once again Tooreen stepped into the tepid waters of a county final against Castlebar Mitchels, who despite a good showing could not deny the east Mayo club their third title in a row and 30th overall. Tooreen set their sights on the Connaught intermediate title, beating Four Roads of Roscommon in the quarterfinal and then Robert Emmett’s of London in a thrilling semi-final before getting the better of Galway champions Kinvara in an epic Connaught decider.

The All-Ireland title was now being talked about and they came oh-so-close to what would have been a sensational result had they beaten Cork and Munster champions Fr. O'Neill’s in the last four in early January.

In the end, Tooreen came up just short in a massive battle but they can look back on a great year with a lot of pride, none more so than our selection as the October prize winner, Sean Kenny.
