Ann Stanton Barrett

Mayo business woman to contest Senate elections

A MAYO business woman has announced her decision to contest the Senate elections.

Ann Staunton-Barrett, proprietor of Bronntanas Gift Shop, Bridge Street, Castlebar, is seeking a seat on the National University of Ireland panel.

A mother of three, she describes herself as a community activist and staunch believer in the old Irish value of NADÚR.

She elaborated: "Seanad Eireann needs the practical input of someone who is independent, non-political, and believes in respect and opportunity for all.

"There is a need to restore respectful comment by removing the anonymity of the internet and encourage civic responsibility by promoting tolerance, inclusion and the dignity of every individual."

Her other priorities include:

* To help create a country which embraces change and yet respects the rights of the citizen.

*Promoting equality and human rights, especially the right to education, the right to pay parity of women and men, the right to be free from intolerance and discrimination.

Other Mayo candidates contesting the election include outgoing Senator Paddy Burke (FG) and Councillor Patsy O'Brien (FG).
