Merit Awards for schoolgirls who represented their country

The first two Merit Award winners in the Mayo Young Sports Stars Awards enjoyed success in the green jersey of Ireland.

In late April, the Republic of Ireland Under 15 Girls schools' team retained the Bob Docherty Cup following a 4-1 victory over debutants Gibraltar in Cambrils Park, Salou.

There were two Mayo girls on the field for the tournament's final game as both Amy Mahon of St. Joseph’s Community College, Charlestown, and Alison Long of St. Patrick's College, Lacken Cross started against Gibraltar.

Having gained eight points in their three group games (two wins and a draw plus a bonus point), the Republic of Ireland were named champions ahead of runners-up Northern Ireland in a complex conclusion to the development tournament.

During the tournament, the Republic of Ireland also captured the John Read Trophy with a 5-3 penalty shootout victory over England in a game that had finished 1-1 in normal time. Ireland commenced their tournament with a 2-0 victory over Scotland.

For their performances with their country, Alison and Amy are worthy merit winners in The Connaught Telegraph Young Sports Stars Awards.
