Mayo train delay caused by 'reckless act'

A GARDA investigation is being conducted into an incident that resulted in the Dublin to Westport train service being delayed for almost three quarters of an hour yesterday.

The incident took place at Knockcroghery at around 10 a.m. when a car drove through a level crossing before proceeding to do a three-point turn.

The incident resulted in a 40 minute delay on the Dublin to Westport service and Irish Rail has confirmed that the barrier was down for over a minute when a train was due.

Speaking to Midwest Radio, Irish Rail spokesperson Jane Cregan said that it was an extremely dangerous and reckless act.
