Mountain rescue team issue advice to walkers

MAYO Mountain Rescue Team (MMRT) will continue to be operational during the Covid-19 crisis.

However, they are appealing to the public to keep MMRT members safe by taking take time to consider and plan before going into the outdoors.

The advice from MMRT is: Consider the risk, assess and plan. Pick a low risk walking option.

In a post on Facebook the team explained: 'Remember, our mountain rescue team members are voluntary and have to get to the emergency and get home safely. A lower leg injury now becomes a bigger task for us.

'If you end up in an emergency situation on the hills in Mayo, the team will ask a few more questions to assess the risk to team members and put necessary precautions in place for our team members. This may take a bit more time.

'In order to keep us and your family and friends safe, minimise your social contact and keep your distance from others.

'If you are out walking, keep your group small and adhere to HSE Covid-19 guidelines.'
