Iconic Ballagh' bar and restaurant closing

DURKIN'S bar and restaurant in Ballaghaderreen – a pitstop for many Mayo fans returning from Croke Park over the years – is closing.

In a social media post this evening, it was confirmed that after 48 years in the catering industry, 44 of them at their present location, Durkin’s bar, restaurant and accommodation will not be reopened by the Durkin family after the Covid-19 lockdown.

In making the announcement, they reflected on almost half century in business: 'There have been many, many more good times than bad over those 48 years, first on Main Street and then from April 1st, 1976, until March 16th last at The Square, not least being all friends we have made through the business.

'We wish to thank all our customers from the town of Ballaghaderreen, the surrounding areas and further afield for their loyal custom over the years, many going back to the earliest years.

'We wish to also thank all our loyal staff over the years who made Durkins the success and the popular destination for a night out it was for so many people.'

Durkins was a popular GAA hub over the years, with many great nights recalled, including celebrating with Ballaghaderreen supporters the local club's senior championship successes in 2008 and 2012, and also with Mayo supporters, Ballaghaderreen being the first stop for many on their way home from Croke Park.

While known as a 'Mayo house', Roscommon and Sligo supporters also called in on their way home from MacHale Park 'for a meal, a drink and goodhearted banter'.

They recalled other memories too: 'The Gay Byrne radio show being broadcast from Durkins and catering for the Irish Government when a cabinet meeting was held in Dillon House (the first time they met outside Dublin) are two other standout moments over the years.'
