Curious lizard paying house visits in west Mayo village

A curious lizard is paying house visits in a rural community in west Mayo.

Residents of Islandeady, near Castlebar, have reported sightings of the cheeky creature in and around their homes.

One home owner encountered the lizard in the hallway and succeeded in getting a photograph of it before it dashed out of sight into the bathroom.

The person immediately locked the room but, on returning later, there was no sign of the reptile and it has not been seen since.

There is only one land reptile species native to Ireland, the common lizard.

But it is considered very rare for them to enter homes - and particularly so when people are there.
