Significant change to west Mayo post office service

Newport Post Office at Meddlicott Street will close its doors for the last time at 4 p.m. on Friday after almost 60 years of being managed by two generations of the McManamon family.

The new office relocates to Castlebar Street in the town and opens Monday morning, June 29, at 10.30 a.m.

In a statement, Jo McManamon explained: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the loyal customers and clients, family, friends, staff, post persons and suppliers who came through our doors over the years for all their kindness, generosity, laughter, loyalty and support.

“I, as am all my family, deeply grateful. It has always been a pleasure serving you and being an important part of the fabric of our community.

“You have made my role as postmistress a joy and from the bottom of my heart I know I will miss you all very much.

“I wish you all the very best and I hope you continue to support and make the post office an integral part of the business and community life of Newport.

“The new post office will relocate to Castlebar Street under the helm of Mary and Michael O'Haire and family.

"I know you will be cared for equally well by them. Let's all wish them every success and good will in this new chapter of their lives when they open their doors for the first time Monday week.

“Sincere thank you and good wishes to you all always.”
