Lockdown beauty: Tips for flawless foundation

AS we all enter back to the 'normal ' world our cosmetics, especially foundations, will need to be replaced. To ensure that you make the right choice for you here are a few tips from Makeup with Megan.

There are a few factors that come into play when you are choosing the right foundation for you. If you don’t understand your skin that lies under the foundation you will never get the picking perfect.

So let’s get straight into it…

(1) Undertone: There are three classifications for undertones: warm, cool, and neutral. If you have warm undertones, your skin will lean peachy, yellow, or golden. If you have cool undertones, your skin will lean pink, red, or blue. And if you have neutral undertones, your skin will have some mixture of these colours. Still unsure of your undertone…here are a couple easy ways to figure it out.

(a) What colour are your veins? If they look blue/purple, you're cool-toned. If green, you're warm-toned. If you have trouble telling, you probably lean neutral.

(b) What colours suit you? If you look best in jewel-tones such as blues, purples, and emerald-greens, you're cool-toned. If you favour earth-tones such as reds, oranges, yellows, and olive-greens, you're warm toned. And for you lucky gals who can get away with all the colours, you are neutral.

(c) Gold or silver? If gold, you're warm-toned. If silver, cool-toned. Look equally good? I'm sure you're seeing the trend with this one.

(d) Do you burn or tan? If you burn you are cool – toned and if you tan, then you are obviously warm toned.

(e) Hair and eye colour: If you have blue, grey, or green eyes with blonde, brown, or black hair that has platinum tones, you are most likely cool-toned. If you have brown, amber, or hazel eyes with strawberry blonde, auburn, or black hair that has gold tones, you are most likely warm-toned.

Knowing your undertone when choosing foundation

So, I have told you how to figure out your undertone but then how does that apply when picking foundation? When choosing foundation take your tone into consideration. If you have pink undertones pick a foundation with a yellowy base that will contrast the pink tones. MAC, the biggest makeup brand in the world, makes this dummy proof for us by making their labelling very clear. They start off their shades with 15, the lightest, up to 55. You can then choose to suit your tone NC…not cool, or NW…not warm. So, NC15, would be ideal for a warm toned pale complexion.

(2) Skin Type :

Normal Skin

Oily Skin.

Combination Skin

Sensitive Skin

Dry Skin

Ageing Skin

(3) Skin Conditions

When choosing foundation, your skin type and its conditions are major factors. For example if you have an oily skin type and prone to congestion, an oil-based foundation with ‘luminating' qualities is the last thing you want to be using on your skin.

The last couple things you need to think about is what type of coverage you need/like.

FOUNDATION TYPES

· Light Coverage…only give light covering, for example BB creams, tinted moisturiser.

· Medium Coverage...my most commonly used gives you good coverage but you can still see your skin, for example I can always see my freckles. Most brands carry Medium Coverage foundation, examples would be NARS SHEER GLOW, GIORGIO ARMANI LUMINUOS FINISH, NOTE COSMETICS.

· Buildable Coverage... a foundation that you can build up to achieve the required coverage - things like mineral powders and some liquid foundations fall in this category.

· Full Coverage… covers all the skin, can have a tendency to be matte, no shimmer or sheen. Examples would be MAC PRO LONG WEAR, HUDA BEAUTY .

FOUNDATION FINISH….Matte or Dewy. …what’s the difference?

Matte makeup an evenly smooth, shine-free, pore-less. Dewy makeup is a natural sheen, high shine, or a radiant sheer glow finish. Choosing the right one has a lot to do with your skin type.
