One month's overcrowding figures for Mayo hospital point to a worrying trend

An analysis conducted by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) has revealed that 348 patients were treated on trolleys at Mayo University Hospital during the month of September.

It's the highest statistic for the month since the INMO started to record hospital overcrowding figures in 2006.

It is three times higher than the figure registered in September 2019, a total of 110.

The previous highest total for the month was 206, recorded in 2016.

The hospital has been using a ward at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar in recent weeks while renovations are taking place in a section of MUH.
