Light Through Our Dreams lights up Mayo town
A NEW light installation in the window of a building in Ballinrobe will light up the street from now until the end of January.
Called Light Through Our Dreams, this ceramic piece was made by Luisne artists with their facilitator Breda Murphy and ceramic artist Amanda Hickey.
Luisne Art Project is a successful, nationally recognised arts programme for people with disabilities, based in Ballinrobe.
In 2019, Luisne Art Project received funding from the UPSTART programme for ceramic workshops with ceramic artist Amanda Hickey. Building on an evolving theme of shadow and light from previous art practice and original drawings, Luisne created this installation exploring the effect of light through ceramic and natural media.
Light Through Our Dreams has taken on additional meaning as 2020 has unfolded. The work references connectedness and the felt need for and beauty of light in times of darkness.
It also suggests that creativity and imagination can help create such light for both artists and viewers alike.
Luisne Art Project was established as a long term arts project of quality which responds to the talents and needs of participants attending the Crann Mór Centre. Initiated in 2005, this partnership project is supported by Mayo County Council Arts Service and Western Care Association with administrative support and workshop space provided by Tacú, Family Resource Centre, Ballinrobe.
The Luisne Art Project artists are Aisling Walsh, Bridie Lally, Emer Prendergast, John Walsh, Katherina Mooney, Martin O’Reilly, Mairead Coyne and Patrick Wall.
Special thanks to John Browne, Ellen Walsh, Bernie Cafferkey and all social care staff at Crann Mór Centre, Tacú Family Resource Centre staff, Martin Jennings, and Edward and Mary Joyce for support in the realisation of Light Through Our Dreams.
Funding from Western Care Association and Mayo County Council Arts Service is gratefully acknowledged.
