Mayo town set to be inspired by two colourful wall murals

THE Foxford Wall Art Project has secured permission from Mayo County Council to erect two professionally painted murals at Joyce's wall and Hennigan's wall in the town centre.

The initiative is influenced by the great community spirit in Ballina over recent years.

Ballina has significantly changed for the better because of the works carried out by their local community groups.

Many rural towns have been in decline since the mid-2000s, yet artwork can do so much to transform and inspire them.

One of the leading wall artists in the country, Friz (Marion Noone, Co. Sligo), has been chosen for this project, the council and building owners being aware of her incredible work in Ballina and across the country.

Such professional artist of the highest quality with a proven extensive portfolio was an essential choice as these two murals will be displayed for a long time and will represent Foxford as a community.

Hennigan's Wall, the second mural location.

Stated Jamie Mulrooney, a member of the project: “We want to help further the progression of our town.

“This will contribute to increasing footfall for local businesses, pride of place, tourism and furthering the aesthetic of Foxford.

“The murals will reflect our local flora, fauna and intertwine our local folklore stories into the works.

“This will not only inspire the younger generation to engage in local community art initiatives but give everyone who sees these pieces of art a clear sense of the cultural significance of our local flora and fauna as well as our local folklore.

“We are hoping that many similar community projects will happen in the near future.

“The Foxford Community Clean Up Group and other local community groups will be integral in completing the project as they will give their time to help get this initiative over the line.

“They continually do so much to further the rejuvenation of the town which we all massively appreciate.

“The locations of these murals are situated in places where the most possible number of people will see them while travelling through Foxford.

“Our small town has a busy road running through the heart of it and both murals will be seen clearly by locals and passers-by, thereby maximising the potential audience.

"We particularly like the idea that these pieces of art will be seen by fresh faces every single day.”

A sum of €5,000 is needed to make the project a reality and €1,200 has already been donated to date via a GoFundMe page.
