Twice-weekly rail freight service between Mayo and Waterford confirmed

Mayo Fianna Fáil Deputy Dara Calleary has welcomed the announcement of a new twice-weekly rail freight service in each direction between Ballina and Waterford Port.

The service, a collaboration between Irish Rail and XPO Logistics will commence at the end of June and will offer a greener and more efficient mode of transporting freight between the west and south east of Ireland.

“This is great news for Ballina Station and its longterm viability,” said Deputy Calleary.

“In recent meetings with Iarnroid Eireann I have advocated the potential of the station for increased freight services particularly with Waterford Port and I am delighted that this new service is to commence in June.

"It will see the potential for over 5,000 truck movements a year to switch from road to rail, with a resulting reduction in road congestion, and 75% reduction in emissions per unit.

“It also adds another dimension for companies and businesses, both existing and those thinking of relocating to Mayo and adds greatly to the attractiveness of the county for any such potential employers.

“I want to congratulate all involved in this initiative not least the wonderful staff of Ballina Station,” he added.
