Community opposition growing to mast overlooking Mayo beauty spot

Community opposition is growing to the planned erection of a 50-ft. monomast by Eircom at a lakeside location in Mayo.

Members of the 'Lough Lannagh Park Conserve Its Beauty' group in Castlebar have published on their Facebook page a view of the proposed mast taken from the planning application.

Residents of the Blackfort and Newport Road areas of the town have made their opposition to the proposal very clear.

They say that placing the mast on an already elevated site would destroy the skyline over Castlebar.

It would also tower over the beautiful landscape of Lough Lannagh, the town's popular amenity.

"We want to preserve the lake in its current beauty. To do so, this proposal must be stopped," a spokesperson added.

Submissions in respect of the planning application before Mayo County Council close on October 5.
