South Mayo mourns passing of musical maestro Courtney Kenny

Ballinrobe Musical Society has paid tribute to its former director, Courtney Kenny, High Street, Ballinrobe, whose death has taken place.

The tribute stated: "As a society, we are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former musical director and dear friend Courtney Kenny.

"Courtney was a central figure in our society for many years throughout the early days of St. Mary's Choral Society.

"Beginning with The Merry Widow in 1977, Courtney was the music man for a total of eight productions.

"He was also responsible for bringing professional opera productions to Ballinrobe in the late '60s and early '70s.

"Indeed, Courtney played a leading role in popularising musical theatre in the town, cultivating a proud musical tradition which flourishes to this day.

"A number of years ago, Courtney was in attendance in St. Mary's Church for a special concert held in tribute to his legacy.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to all his family and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis."

The popular 'Old Photos Ballinrobe' Facebook page also featured a warm tribute to the deceased.

It said: "Courtney’s musical legacy is immense at local, national and international level.

"Ballinrobe has a proud musical tradition and Courtney was one of the leading figures in popularising opera in the town through his involvement in many shows.

"Furthermore, the visits to Ballinrobe of his opera company are still warmly remembered in the town.

"Ballinrobe has always been proud of Courtney Kenny.

"He represented the town and Mayo on the international stage with distinction."

The funeral arrangements will be announced later.
