2025 completion date for Newport sewerage scheme

CONSTRUCTION of the new Newport sewerage scheme is scheduled for completion in 2025.

It is one of a number of projects nationwide where Irish Water plan to eliminate raw sewage discharges by the end of 2025.

Design work for the scheme is being progressed, the cathaoirleach of the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District, Councillor Brendan Mulroy, has confirmed.

Local Councillor John O'Malley, at a local municipal district meeting, said the lack of the scheme was holding back the town and it needed to be delivered.

It wasn't fair on businesses who want to start up or expand.

His colleague assured him Newport is in the strategic investment plan, the money is there, and it's being progressed.

Elsewhere in the county, Irish Water has also confirmed plans are also in place to upgrade the wastewater treatment plant in Claremorris to allow for continued growth and development in the town.
