Kiltimagh park plans before councillors for approval

A PART 8 planning application in respect of the new park in Kiltimagh will come before local councillors for approval this week.

A report on the development of the new ‘emigrant park’ on vacant lands to the rear of Main Street, James Street and Thomas Street is on the agenda for consideration at the monthly Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District meeting tomorrow (Wednesday).

Plans for the park include community gardens, an enclosed community area and communal outdoor classroom with seating, a wildlife pond with boardwalk and viewing platform, as well as a MUGA facility and ‘pumptrack’ bike park.

Five new pedestrian access points are proposed at various locations around the park perimeter.

Hard and soft landscaping works, surface paving, planting, boundary treatments, wildlife-friendly lighting and bicycle parking are also part of the site development works.

The proposals have been out for public consultation with five submissions received by Mayo County Council for consideration.

Parking is the main concern raised in the submissions.

As one submission observed: 'The local national school is just across the road from the proposed development. There is already major concerns about traffic congestion and this proposed development will only add to this already difficult situation.

'We proposed that there should be adequate parking facilities on the actual site as is with most playground areas in the county. This should be a given with respect to the location of the development, i.e. national school, houses, and already lack of parking facilities in the area.'
