Pressure on Irish Water over west Mayo sewerage treatment plant

Work on the design of the Newport Sewerage Scheme is ongoing with the current efforts concentrating on suitability of effluent discharge points.

That's according to a report furnished to Councillor Brendan Mulroy by Irish Water.

The update continued: "A site for the treatment plant has been identified.

"Mayo County Council purchased a site a number of years ago when the local authority was advancing the scheme and this site will be used for the proposed plant.

"The completion date agreed with the regulator is 2025 and Irish Water is committed to delivering the project by then."

Councillor Mulroy said he intends to keep the pressure on Irish Water until the facility is up and running.

A recent EPA report identified Newport as one of the towns in Ireland where untreated wastewater is still being discharged into the sea.
